Sometimes called the drinks reception, my wife and I have had our moments!
As musicians we are often requested to play outside while the Bride and Groom mix with the guests and have their photos taken.
On one occasion we were asked to play in the middle of a field as the wedding party gathered for photos about 30 meters away. Without any amplification - no power plugs nearby - we played as loud as we could when a gust of wind blew our music off of the music stands.
Having stopped to chase the music across the field we resumed playing, as best we could, with washing pegs holding our music in place. Of course we had to stop the stands from being blown over by holding them down with our feet.
Playing music for the wedding reception, following the civil ceremony, is the most relaxed part of the wedding proceedings for us and the guests too. However, if you ever book a small ensemble to play at your reception, make sure they can be heard and if outside, it's not too windy!

Music for Wedding Receptions
The Bride and Groom have just become "man and wife", the photographer and guests are snapping away with their cameras, the atmosphere of the wedding reception is informal and relaxed and in the background a flute and classical guitar are playing a selection of pieces chosen by the couple to enhance the mood of the occasion.
The flute and guitar are a good choice for this part of a wedding, not least because of their versatility, able to fit in to most small areas such corners of a large room for example and can play a huge range of musical styles from classical to contemporary.
My wife and I have a large repertoire and are able to play most styles of music for wedding receptions.

Wedding Venues
Choosing where to get married can be a difficult decision. Do you hold your ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast and different locations, or do you go for a package.
Of course there are many civil wedding venues that can offer the whole works but whether you choose a church or civil ceremony, getting married in a hotel or similar venue is now very popular.
Also, getting married off-peak is a good way of saving money as there are often reductions in costs for couples who hold their wedding on days other than the traditional Saturday.
The wedding venue may also have some influence on the wedding music. Choosing music to walk down the aisle to and the musicians to play it, can be a difficult task.
